La Dooagh beach sur Achill Island - Keith Ewing - cc

Visiter Dooagh beach.

Dooagh beach is a beach like no other, located on Achill Island, an Irish island in County Mayo. Known throughout the world, this beach is unlike any other, as it has a rather curious history: it disappeared for over 33 years, before naturally re-forming in 2017! It was a strange phenomenon that made headlines at the time!

A beach that was swept away by a storm in 1984… and is being rebuilt in 2017!

It’s the real curiosity of Achill Island: Dooagh beach is an Irish beach that is said to have disappeared, then reappeared according to local storms and weather conditions.

It all began in 1984, when the beach actually existed. But a storm was to wipe it off the map: the sand was washed away, and the water swept everything in its path. All that remains are simple, bare, sad rocks. The inhabitants of Dooagh on Achill Island are sorry to see that they have lost their local beach.

But 33 years later, in 2017, similar climatic conditions completely restored the beach. The sand is carried by ocean currents and tides. Dooagh beach is back to life! It’s a surprise for the locals: they can enjoy the beach again!

“In April, around Easter, we had a dry cold and a wind from the north,” recalls Sean Molloy, manager at Achill Tourism.”

This would have covered the rocks with several million tonnes of sand, creating a magnificent beach almost 300 metres long! As a result, the beach is once again passable. We love its fine sand and pretty views out to sea.

It’s a great place to put your towel down in summer, take a dip and play with the family (sandcastles will keep your kids busy for a while).

Nevertheless, the locals like to joke with the tourists who come to admire the beach:

Enjoy it while it lasts! There’s no guarantee that tomorrow, Dooagh Beach will still be with us!

A fine example of Irish philosophy, combining humour and wisdom!
