Minard Castle is the 3rd castle on the Dingle Peninsula, built by the Fiztgerald clan (after Rahinnane Castle and Gallarus Castle).
Although in ruins, the outlines of the castle are still visible: a rectangular tower made of sandstone blocks and mortar.
Although it no longer has its full height (part of the tower having been destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s attacks), the tower once consisted of 4 floors, the first 2 of which had vaulted ceilings.
According to historians, the castle was particularly solid. So much so, that during the Cromwellian conquests (circa 1650), it withstood the explosive charges scattered around the 4 corners of the tower. However, its inhabitants were murdered during the assault, and the castle was deemed uninhabitable (although still structurally viable).
Nowadays, the castle has been abandoned, but tourists come to admire its every detail. The icing on the cake: its proximity to the beach makes it a building of indescribable charm! Don’t hesitate to have a picnic on the beach: the view of Minard Castle is fabulous, and a complete change of scenery!
