If you love ruined buildings, don’t miss the sumptuous Quoile Castle, a 16th-century castle now in ruins, just 2 km from Downpatrick. Magnificent, it offers a lovely show, rich in silences!
Quoile Castle is thought to have been built in the 16th century and was inhabited until the 18th century. Once considered one of the most important administrative centers in the Down region, the castle has long enjoyed a certain aura.
Situated 2.4km from Downpatrick, the castle is a 3-storey tower in the Anglo-Saxon style. Unfortunately, part of the walls have collapsed, and the southern corner of the castle provides a true cross-section, revealing the interior of Quoile Castle. You’ll be able to distinguish the ground floor with its vaulted ceiling, 2 bedrooms and 2 fireplaces, spread over the different floors.
The site is freely accessible, but the ruins are dangerous, so we advise against entering the castle grounds. Don’t hesitate to walk around it from the outside to get the most out of it. The château is bathed in a peaceful, bucolic atmosphere, ideal for taking a break!
