Near Killarney is McCarthy’s Castle, a stunning ruined castle built on a rocky outcrop. Overlooking the lake of Lough Leane, it was once the property of former Irish kings (of the McCarthy’s clan), who later swore allegiance to the Kingdom of England. Today, only a few elements of the building remain… but its serious charm, lost in the wilderness, makes it well worth a visit!
McCarthy’s Castle is believed to have been built around the 9th or 10th century. All that remains today are the foundations and the beginnings of the walls. The latter is said to have been destroyed as a result of repeated conflicts during Cromwell’s conquests.
According to the researchers, the castle consisted of a single tower, reaching up to thirty meters in height. Pierced by slender windows, the castle protected Loch Lein and the surrounding area.
Although it’s in ruins, today it’s a magnificent sight, with its lake, fallen stones, and the pines and other trees that have grown up around it. The visit, though short, will give you an idea of its former splendor and the quality of its architecture.
Be careful, however, not to venture into places that are too fragile: the ruins can be wobbly!
A hotel has also been built directly opposite the castle: open all year round, it welcomes tourists who come to enjoy the peace and quiet and the breathtaking view of McCarthy’s Castle.
