Another wild and beautiful place! Sauce Creek is an Irish cove surrounded by towering cliffs. Located on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, this majestic site is well worth a visit! A hike is also available to discover all its beauty! Find out more below!
Before talking about exploration, it’s worth knowing that the cove was once inhabited. A handful of Irish had taken up residence on the beach below. But an incident prompted them to leave.
One day, a doctor was called in to deliver a young woman who lived in Sauce Creek. But access was difficult, and the doctor fell to his death. Following this tragedy, the creek’s inhabitants decided to move to a safer location…
Since then, Sauce Creek has been a completely wild place, accessible on foot. Exploring it is well worth the detour, and will take you right to the top of the cliffs. The view from the top is incredible! Vertiginous!
If you’re a keen walker, there’s a 1.5-hour trail that takes you to the top of the cliffs. The path is perfectly signposted and safe. However, you’ll need good hiking boots, a backpack, something to eat and something to cover up in case the weather changes.
To do this, you’ll need to leave from Brandon Point (where there’s free parking and a safe place to leave your car). You can then follow the signposted path.
Once at the top, the view is incredible. Beware of gales, as the cliffs are not secured and can be dangerous if you get too close to the edge.
You’ll catch a glimpse of the cove below, with its fine sand, the ocean and its waves… And its impressive cliffs: rock giants unperturbed by the repeated assaults of the wind!
It can get pretty cold at the summit: the wind blows hard and warm clothing is a must.
The return journey takes the same route as the outward journey.
Note that it’s also possible to make a real loop, but this will require you to go through Faill an tSàis. Please note that this loop takes about 2h30/3h00 longer. There’s also a signposted path to take you along the way. The icing on the cake: this path takes you to a viewpoint overlooking Brandon Bay. The view is superb and will give you the impression of being alone in the world! The trail will then take you through Teer, then through the village of Brandon… where you’ll reach your starting point: Brandon Point, tired but happy!
