If you’ve enjoyed your visit to Glendalough, then you’re sure to love a trip to nearby St Kevin’s Bed. It’s a tiny grotto on the south shore of Upper Lake. This is precisely where the founder of Glendalough monastery lived as a hermit…

St Kevin’s cave is far from easy to visit. It’s worth pointing out that it’s located on a cliff 10 metres above the shoreline… and no access ramp has been built for visiting it!
So we recommend you admire it from afar, along the Miner’s Road footpath. This hiking trail follows the Upper Lake and gives you the chance to see the grotto on the other side of the lake!
Although only a dark hole is visible, the cave is ridiculously small. It wouldn’t be more than a metre high! Legend has it that St Kevin’s Bed simply served as a cavity where Saint Kevin would go to lie down, sleep and pray.
