For many years, the village of Allihies was one of the country’s leading mining centers. That’s why one of the village’s star attractions is the Allihies Copper Mine Trail. This is a hiking trail that allows you to discover the old mining sites. Beautiful trails and breathtaking views!
The attraction starts at the foot of the Mountain Mine, where one of the mine’s most important buildings is located. A must-see with its grey chimney, the building can be reached by following a small signposted path. Fairly easy to navigate, it will nevertheless require good footwear to avoid slipping in the rubble.
The gradient rises a little, but at the finish you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the village and the Atlantic Ocean. It has to be said that this is a magical place with a certain charm.
Don’t hesitate to explore the building: many walls have stood the test of time, and the fireplace is still intact. It’s also possible to visit it from the inside: the site will give you an idea of how copper was mined in the 19th century.
A walk that can be complemented by a visit to the Allihies Copper Mine Museum, a small museum dedicated entirely to the village’s mining history!
