The Allahies North Engine Loop is a hiking trail that starts from the village of Allihies (Co. Cork) in Ireland, and takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in south-west Ireland. Start off in the colorful village, then explore the coastline, before heading inland to the old disused mines lost in the wilderness. The walk is well worth the detour and is only 7 kilometers long. Perfect for getting your feet wet and soaking up the charm of the Irish countryside!
Ireland is a treasure trove that can only be explored on foot. And that’s the case with Allihies’ North Engine Loop tour, which plunges you into the heart of untamed wilderness, between craggy cliffs, coastal paths and panoramic views of sea and land.
A great way to get away from it all and experience nature at its purest!
The tour forms a loop, starting at the Allihies Visitor Centre. Allow around 2 hours 30 minutes to complete the tour, covering some 7 km. Take your time, stroll at your own pace and stop off to enjoy the scenery!
You’ll pass Ballydonegan Strand beach, then follow a coastal path, before heading inland to where the village’s disused mines once stood. It was here, in this location, that Allihies exploited large copper deposits in the 19th century. Today, the area has been abandoned, but a museum is still dedicated to Allihies’ mining history. Don’t hesitate to visit the Allihies Copper Mine Museum: a fascinating facility located right on the circuit. Perfect for completing your exploration!
Finally, the loop ends at Allihies, where you started. And don’t forget to round off your trip with a stop at the area’s flagship pub, O’Neills, with its dazzling red front. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a pint of Irish food and music!
