Blackrock Mayo is a magnificent Irish lighthouse on a rocky outcrop off Achill Island. Considered the most isolated and remote lighthouse in Ireland, it is breathtakingly beautiful, standing 70 metres above the sea.
The Blackrock Mayo lighthouse was completed in 1864, to better protect the Irish coastline and local fishermen. Located on the westernmost point of its rocky outcrop, life here is particularly tough.
As a result, the lighthouse keepers are forced to live without goats, milk or fruit, and in total isolation. Even the most clement weather prevents them from returning to Achill Island to replenish their supplies…
Only a few courageous boats regularly supplied them with drinking water and food. It’s a tough life, which makes Black rock Mayo one of Ireland’s most hostile natural environments…
As you can see, the Blackrock Mayo is a tough place to visit. Although still in operation, it is not accessible to visitors due to its difficult environment. You can still see it from the shores of Achill Island, or for the lucky ones, admire it from the sky, by taking a helicopter ride!
