Cahergal Stone Fort is an ancient stone fort located near Caherciveen in County Kerry. Dating from the 7th or 8th century, its shape is similar to that of other Irish forts, including Staigue Stone Fort. A lovely curiosity, which will take you back to the time of the Irish Middle Ages!

The Cahergal Stone Fort is a medieval edifice, built as a stronghold for the local kings of the time.
The fort measures 27 metres in diameter, with imposing walls ranging from 2 to 4 metres high and 5 metres thick! There are 7 staircases leading to the top of the walls. Don’t hesitate to take them: the view from the top is superb, dominating Caherciveen and the surrounding area!
The fort was renovated in the 1990s: the walls were raised and the staircases refurbished. This allowed us to consolidate the building and open it up to visitors.
In the center of the fort, there’s also a courtyard, as well as a second circular building measuring around 7 meters in diameter.
Speculation as to the building’s purpose remains unclear, but archaeologists continue to study the site, and compare it with Staigue Stone Fort, an almost identical circular fort also located in County Kerry.
Don’t hesitate to stop by: the visit is free and the site is remarkable!
