The Cloughmore Stone, also known as “The Big Stone”, is a huge rock located above the village of Rostrevor in County Down, Northern Ireland. Made up entirely of granite, this rock is one of the region’s most interesting sights!
The Cloughmore Stone is quite impressive! Its granite mass is estimated at over 50 tons!
According to geologists, it is the result of the displacement of a rock from the Ice Age. It would have been transported naturally from Scotland to County Down.
As for the legend, the Irish have a very different version. Local legend has it that the stone was launched from the Cooley mountains on the other side of Carlingford Lough by the giant Fionn mac Cumhaill.
Traditionally, this rock is the object of a small ceremony: most of the inhabitants of the village of Rostrevor gather here at Easter, and take advantage of the opportunity to drop their eggs from the top of the hill where the rock is located.
In any case, the visit to the rock is free and quite enjoyable!
