The brand-new museum dates back to 2019. It’s unique in that it’s housed in a building adjacent to the Burren Smokehouse, an establishment offering artisanal smoked salmon (the salmon is actually smoked on the premises, using age-old techniques recognized in Ireland).
The Taste The Atlantic – The Salmon Experience is a gigantic interactive museum that tells the story of salmon, its place in Irish mythology (the famous salmon of knowledge) and its farming methods.
You’ll learn that almost 80% of Irish salmon is certified organic. It is raised in aquaculture farms that respect the needs of the fish (no overpopulation), and is fed exclusively with non-GMO products. Ethical and responsible processes that contribute to making Irish salmon an internationally renowned product that stands out from Norwegian and Scottish salmon.
The center features an interactive exhibition, as well as traditional objects related to salmon farming in Ireland.
It also features more than 24 local Irish producers, specializing in fish smoking, aquaculture (salmon, mackerel) and seafood (oysters, Irish mussels, lobster, crab, etc.).
You’ll discover their ancestral techniques, combined with today’s modern methods. You can sample a few products on site, including salmon from the Burren Smokehouse.
