Visiter Upper Lake.

Upper Lake is an Irish lake located in the hollow of a valley in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. The area is wild as can be, and very popular with visitors, who like to walk along its shores… It has to be said that the area is exceptional, and even boasts a world-renowned archaeological site: the monastery of Glendalough, an archaeological site founded in the 6th century!

Upper Lake is one of the only lakes in the National Park, along with Lower Lake. Between them, they encircle the mountainous Wicklow Mountains, stretching across the entire valley in a breathtaking spectacle…

The lake’s appearance changes with the day and the weather: it can take on azure hues in fine weather, and a deep, dark color in stormy weather…

Anglers beware: even if the lake is tempting, it’s forbidden to fish there (unless exceptionally authorized by the organization in charge of protecting the Wicklow Mountains National Park).

The shores of the lake are best explored on foot, as the Park prohibits all use of vehicles to preserve the area. It’s a great place to hike, especially as you’ll come across the famous Glendalough monastery, a particularly well-preserved 6th-century religious complex… The program includes a ruined monastery, a round tower and tombstones engraved with Celtic interlacing and crosses… A pure marvel!

It’s free to visit, and well worth the effort: it’s one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions!
