Irish Wish

Just released on Netflix, Irish Wish starring Lindsay Lohan is a romantic comedy set in Ireland. Although the pitch may seem a little atypical, the film is set in an Ireland inhabited by fairy tales and legends, against a backdrop of fabulous, 100% Irish landscapes. If watching the film has inspired you to discover Ireland, here’s a look at the locations where Irish Wish was filmed.

The pitch

A rom-com set against the backdrop of an Irish legend!

Maddie, an American, is in love with her colleague and friend Paul Kennedy, a successful Irish writer. Just as she’s about to confess her feelings to him, everything changes when he falls in love with her best friend.

After months of romance, Paul asks the young woman to marry him… much to Maddie’s dismay. Everyone flies off to Ireland, Paul’s homeland and the venue for the festivities…

But Maddie is about to make an unfortunate wish on a legendary Irish site… hoping to marry Paul…

No sooner said than done! A mischievous fairy will plunge Maddie into an alternate reality where she must marry the man of her heart! And so begin a series of incredible adventures in Ireland’s breathtaking landscapes!

Irish Wish filming locations

1. Killruddery House, Co. Wicklow

Located in County Wicklow, Killruddery House is a manor house used as Paul Kennedy’s family home. Considered a national treasure, its architecture and the wild beauty of its grounds make it a place of character, a symbol of Irish aristocracy.

Dating from the early 17th century, Killruddery House was built by the Brabazon family, one of the most powerful Anglo-Norman families to settle in Ireland. Its remarkable architecture, a blend of Elizabethan and Jacobean styles, makes it an outstanding example of the elegance and refinement of the period.

Inside, the manor house is brimming with charm and character. Visitors are invited to discover its richly decorated rooms, adorned with magnificent tapestries, antique furniture and family portraits.

2. Lough Tay, Co. Wicklow

Nicknamed “Lake Guinness”, Lough Tay is one of the most emblematic places in the Wiklow Mountains National Park. With its mysterious dark waters and sandy beach, the lake is surrounded by mountains and is said to be shaped like a pint! (Granted, it takes a bit of imagination to project!).

Magnificent, the area generally attracts lovers of hiking and wide-open spaces.

In the film, it’s one of the very first places the characters explore. They’d even take a ride on pink rowboats… while Maddie made her famous magic wish!

3. Powerscourt Distillery, Co. Wicklow

Watching the film, you quickly realize that the settings are not depicted in any logical proximity… Better still, they used Irish locations to represent American locations!

So Irish Wish called on Powerscourt Distillery’s art-deco bar to represent the very first bar to be located in the USA.

This magical distillery produces 100% Irish whiskey, and even offers tours of its vats and stills for tourists! A place steeped in history!

4. Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare

The magical Cliffs of Moher are used as a backdrop for Lindsay Lohan and Ed Speleers. This is where the Irish photographer takes Maddie’s picture, with the cliffs as a backdrop.

Beautifully filmed, the Cliffs are a masterpiece! At over 214 metres high, they attract thousands of visitors every year to admire the breathtaking views!

A must-see in magical, romantic County Clare, known as the perfect breeding ground for marriage proposals!

5. Matt Molloy’s Pub, Co. Mayo

This time, we’ll meet you at the pub owned by Matt Molloy, the famous member of the Chieftains, who has kindly lent his home to be used as a set for the film! In fact, it’s the setting for Scruffy Murphy’s, an Irish pub where James Thomas’s character stayed during his trip to Ireland!

A little later in the film, Lindsay Lohan spends a memorable evening there, with a wild Irish music session!
