Wren’s Day

Des bottes de foin - Daniel Mennerich - cc

Every year, some Irish villages have the tradition of celebrating “Wren’s Day” on December 26th. This annual festival, with druidic origins, involves parading through the town dressed in straw costumes.

Orchestras naturally take part, giving the Irish a chance to express their connection to an ancient Celtic heritage. As for the meaning of Wren’s Day, it remains unclear to researchers. Some suggest it might be a ceremony similar to Samhain (Halloween), possibly to celebrate the winter solstice…

In any case, some villages still keep the tradition alive today, such as those on the Dingle Peninsula. They parade through the streets covered in straw, then organize races on unusual bicycles! Definitely worth seeing!
