In Ireland, boxty is one of the national dishes not to be missed. Delicious, these are grated potato pancakes pan-fried in butter (like a doormat). The result is delicious, and one of the great classics of Irish cuisine… The dish is so popular, in fact, that there are many variations… And among the favorites is the Irish Smoked Salmon Boxty. A real delight!

In Ireland, we love simple dishes, and combining them to make a grand meal. The salmon Boxty is one of them. This dish brings together two of Ireland’s great specialties: the potato, which is so dear to the Irish (and has always been part of their staple diet throughout history), and smoked salmon, of which the country is a master.
Ireland has always had unrivalled expertise in breeding and smoking Atlantic salmon. The country’s ancestral techniques have been handed down from generation to generation, producing exceptional fish of great finesse and subtlety! (Among the best Irish houses, we recommend the smoked salmon from Burren Smokehouse, Connemara Smokehouse and Belvelly Smokehouse.
Needless to say, Irish Boxty and salmon are a perfect match.
It can be enjoyed for breakfast, as part of a full Irish breakfast, or for lunch or dinner. There are no rules!
The dish is generally eaten in its simplest form, combining readily available ingredients such as potatoes, salmon, crème fraîche, lemon and herbs (dill, chives or parsley).
When tasted, it’s a pure delight!
Salmon Boxty is easy to prepare at home. But you can also enjoy them in Ireland, in restaurants specializing in Irish cuisine, or in Irish pubs offering meals on the premises. Not all establishments offer it, but it’s a classic of the genre!
Prices range from €8 to €15, depending on the type of salmon used. (The more artisanal the salmon, the more expensive it is. But believe us, it’s worth it!)
