Lost on an island in the middle of Loughadoon, Doon Fort is a magnificent historic structure. A must-see!

The Five Finger Strand

One of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland! Here, the colors of the water and sand blend together, sometimes tending towards lagoon-like hues (without the hot temperatures, of course)!

Good to Know

Practical info

How do I get there?

Donegal does not have an airport providing large-scale regular international connections. By car, allow around 3 to 4 hours from Dublin to the county’s main areas, depending on the destination and traffic. From Belfast or Derry/Londonderry, access to northern and eastern Donegal is more direct. Bus services connect Dublin, Derry/Londonderry and several towns in the county, but a car remains strongly recommended for reaching the peninsulas, beaches, mountains and isolated natural sites.

When to visit?

From May to September, the longer days make hikes and long coastal journeys easier. June offers particularly long days, while May, June and September often allow visitors to travel with more moderate crowds than at the height of summer. Donegal is nevertheless highly exposed to the Atlantic: rain, wind, fog and sunny spells can follow one another quickly whatever the season. For mountain hikes and crossings to the islands, always check local conditions before setting out.

Don't forget

Donegal is much larger than it appears on a map. Avoid planning Slieve League, Glenveagh, Fanad and Malin Head for the same day: the indented coastline and minor roads considerably lengthen journey times. For a stay of several days, splitting overnight stops between the south-west and north of the county generally helps to limit driving hours.
