Letterfrack

Letterfrack (Leitir Fraic) is a tiny Irish village in Connemara, less than 15km from Clifden, and the gateway to Connemara National Park, nestled between ocean (with Barnaderg Bay) and mountains (including the majestic Diamond Hill).

History of Letterfrack

A village founded by Quakers

Letterfrack is a relatively new town, founded only in the mid-19th century by a couple of Quakers, James Ellis and Mary Ellis (Quackers are a community of Protestants whose dogmas differ somewhat from the original doctrine).

The development of Letterfrack was a great success: the creation of the village attracted many people from the Connemara region in search of work, and the village’s activity seemed to be highly profitable.

In 1882, Letterfrack was purchased by the Bishopric of Tuam, who wished to turn the village into a reformatory for juvenile delinquents. The school operated from 1888 until 1973, when it closed.

Today, Letterfrack takes full advantage of its geographical location, and every year welcomes thousands of tourists who come to admire the beauty of the Connemara National Park.

Letterfrack is rather different from traditional Irish villages. It’s more of a crossroads than a village in its own right. Houses are scattered all over the place: there’s no real town center…

However, you should know that the village has countless possibilities in terms of accommodation, excellent pubs and restaurants. This makes it a very interesting town: a perfect base from which to discover the wonders of Connemara! Starting with the famous Kylemore Abbey and its magnificent castle. Two of the region’s top tourist attractions!

Letterfrack is also the perfect place to explore the Renvyle Peninsula: a fabulously wild corner between land and sea that promises a pleasant break from nature!

Last but not least, don’t miss the local beaches: ideal for relaxing, their fine sand will convince you to put down your towel!

Lettefrack is first and foremost a starting point for immersing yourself in Connemara. Don’t hesitate to stop here before embarking on an unforgettable exploration!
