Atlantic Drive on Achill Island – Randy Durrum – cc
The Atlantic Drive starts at Achill Sound, by taking the R319. You’ll pass through the villages of Polranny, Tonragee, Owenduff and Mulranny.
You can also admire Bellacragher Bay, a magnificent bay with a fish farm.
If you continue, you’ll admire Polranny Hill (452m) and Curraun Hill (524m), 2 imposing mountains overgrown by thick forest.
Then take the N59 towards the Currane Peninsula. It offers an incredible view of Clew Bay and its 300 islands… If you’re lucky, you’ll even be able to make out Croagh Patrick standing on the other side of the bay!
Then discover Granuaile’s Tower, a magnificent structure built in 1429 and once owned by the famous Irish pirate Grace O’Malley (also known as Granuaile in Irish Gaelic).
Then follow a short circuit along the coast to the village of Ashleam. Here, you’ll admire stretches of rhododendron, green valleys and cliffs plunging sheer into the ocean. The view is magnificent!
The circuit is complete once back in Achill Sound. Allow around 80km to complete the Atlantic Drive!
