Would you like to explore the fantastic landscapes of the Burren? Look no further than the Black Head Loop, a hiking loop that promises a wilderness experience like no other! Magnificent, it will take you from the coast to the interior, and will offer you atypical landscapes. But be warned: although this is the most popular hike in the area, it’s also the most difficult! We’ll tell you more right away.
If you’ve got itchy hiking boots, and you’re not afraid of demanding hikes, we’re ready to meet you on Fanore beach. This is where the Black Head Loop begins, a walking circuit that takes you through the limestone landscapes of the Burren.
Expect a fairly well-marked trail, with narrowings in places. The program includes a walk across the geological plateaus of the Burren, a discovery of the coastline, a walk along the Black Head lighthouse, and many other surprises!
It all starts with a coastal path, which gives you a glimpse of Galway Bay and the Aran Islands in the distance.
Then you’ll venture up Gleninagh Mountain, via its greenway. Beware: the gradient is steep and requires strong legs and good stamina. Not for children!
Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible view of the Burren’s lunar landscapes.
Then it’s back down to the Caher valley, across it and back to Fanore Beach, your starting point.
The village has a number of pleasant Irish pubs and restaurants: perfect for a refreshing drink or a typical Irish dish after a long day’s walking!
