Carrantuohill, a mountain for hardy hikers

Carrantuohill is part of a mountain range known as Macgillicuddy’s Reeks. Situated right in the middle of this mountain range, the mountain below boasts magnificent lakes, forests and stretches of russet moorland… while its summit is made up of rocks, steep walls, stones and paths…

Of course, climbing this mountain is primarily for experienced hikers.

We recommend that you discover Carrantuohill in the company of a certified guide. Firstly, because the circuit is not always signposted, and requires a good knowledge of the area. But also because the mountain’s surroundings are private. Here, it’s not the state that owns the mountain, but landowners who allow certain guides to pass through their land. Without this authorization, you may encounter some difficulties.

In terms of difficulty, the ascent of Mount Carrantuohill requires a good level of walking (and climbing for the more adventurous). Leave well equipped, with rucksack, provisions, water, food… And above all, with hiking boots and a helmet for your safety.

If your skill level leaves something to be desired, we recommend exploring the rest of the Macgillicuddy’s Reeks mountain range. Less strenuous, it can be enjoyed by the whole family, without any problems of level, safety or equipment.

Climbing to the summit: a tour for experienced hikers only

If you’re a good walker, motivated and hardy, and you’re not afraid of the cold, then Carrantuohill is the mountain for you! But be careful, it will require effort and tenacity. Climbing to the top of Carrantuohill requires a good day’s work on both the outward and return journey.

Ask your guide about the weather: the mountain tends to be heavily misted, and it would be a shame to miss the final panorama! The clearer the sky, the more you’ll enjoy it!

The start of the hike is on a small, signposted trail with little difference in altitude. But don’t be fooled by appearances: very soon, the trail ends and takes you into wilder, more physical terrain. The terrain is often stony and grassy, with steep gradients, and has not been “prepared” for human use.

While you’re up there, don’t forget to take in the surrounding scenery: it’s a truly breathtaking spectacle, and it would be unthinkable to have forgotten your camera! You’ll see magnificent azure lakes (on a clear day), and the beauty of the surrounding Macgillicuddy’s Reeks mountains. The play of light will plunge you into an atmosphere where nature reigns supreme, far from the preoccupation of mankind.

Once you’ve reached the top, the ultimate reward is the elusive panorama Carrantuohill gives you of the surrounding countryside. Mountains, lakes, wilderness… Green blends perfectly with the colors of sky and rock… It’s a truly exhilarating experience! Not far from you is also a Catholic cross: a real landmark for devout Irish people, who often see this climb as a pilgrimage in itself! Whatever your beliefs or not, Carrantuohill is an opportunity for everyone to surpass themselves, and set out to conquer themselves… A unique and, above all, unforgettable adventure!
