Visiter The Skellig Lighthouse.

The Skellig Lighthouse is an Irish lighthouse located on the island of Michael Skellig, off the coast of County Kerry. Isolated from the rest of the world, this automated lighthouse was built right into the cliff, to provide greater safety for approaching boats. A magnificent lighthouse on an emblematic island!

An isolated lighthouse, lost against the Atlantic

The Michael Skellig lighthouse stands on the south-western tip of the island. The 12-metre-high building is one of the most important lighthouses on the Irish west coast.

Built around 1821, it has since been fully automated, and currently operates without human intervention or the presence of lighthouse keepers. A few solar panels added in 2011 mean that it is totally self-sufficient, even in the event of a blackout.

Although not open to visitors, there’s nothing to stop you from getting up close to the lighthouse and admiring its design, as well as its breathtaking ocean views. Note the presence of numerous seabirds, which will offer you a veritable concert of peals!
