Carrowkeel Cairns is a group of Neolithic tombs in southern County Sligo. It is one of the four largest prehistoric cemeteries in Ireland (after Brú na Bóinne, Loughcrew Cairns, and Carrowmore). A site not to be missed!
Carrowkeel consists of 14 corridor tombs located on the wild Irish moors. Most are arranged in the form of cairns (circular constructions covered with stones).
These were only discovered in the early 1900s, and excavated in 1911 by Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister, Robert Lloyd Praeger and Edmund Clarence Richard Armstrong. These included cremated bones, pottery, stone beads and engravings on the walls.
Visits to the cairns are possible and free of charge, as long as you don’t enter or walk on the graves and stony mounds. The area is truly magical and timeless. A wonderful visit, to be enjoyed alone or with the family!
