The Connemara Way (also known as Galway’s Western Way), is a circuit suitable for good walkers and promises just over a week’s walking. The best time to do it is from April to October, and it requires good equipment, as well as stopping points with accommodation.
The Connemara Way is also ideal for hiking and bivouacking. You’ll be able to hike and pitch your tent at campsites in the region. If you prefer the comfort of a good bed, then the bed and breakfast option is the way to go.
All-inclusive packages are available, with guides accompanying you for the entire tour. Their advantage is considerable: they take care of booking your accommodation, and transport your luggage at every stage. Perfect for walking without breaking your back with your stuff!
Starting in Oughterard, this trek takes you to the heart of mythical and legendary lands. You’ll walk through heather, along the shores of deep, mysterious lakes… you’ll reach misty passes offering incredible views… In short, this tour is well worth the detour and offers a glimpse of Connemara’s great wilderness.
This circuit has the particularity of using very few asphalt roads. You’ll soon be heading out onto nature trails: the perfect way to disconnect from civilization and reconnect with what’s essential!

Let’s set off on a lovely trek through the wilderness! Put on your rucksack and set off from Oughterard, a small, warm and colorful hamlet.
Then take a side road that leads to the shores of a lake.
The road then turns into a nature trail, and we head deep into the wilderness. You then enter a forest that takes you right to the heart of the Irish plains. Enjoy incredible views of the Maumturks Mountains, a magnificent mountain range.
Overnight at Maam Cross.

After a hearty Irish breakfast, with its famous sausages, eggs and bacon, it’s time to start walking again!
Today, you’ll have to follow the road through the Maumtuks Mountains, over the Maumeen Pass, not far from Saint Patrick’s Chapel (a major Catholic pilgrimage site).
Once over the pass, you’ll reach a lush green valley and the lake of Lough Inagh.
Overnight in the area.

After a good night’s sleep, you’ll continue through the Lough Inagh valley.
You’ll then reach the famous Killary Harbour fjord (the only ford in Ireland!) and more precisely the small village of Lennane, famous for its sumptuous seascapes and typical atmosphere, with its sheep, and its suspended atmosphere, as if out of time.
Enjoy one of their famous seafood platters. A real treat! Push the door of their pubs and spend the night. (Time to recover from your aches and pains!)
Head for Aasleagh Falls, a magnificent waterfall much loved by salmon… and anglers too! The waters here are prolific and pristine, providing the perfect opportunity for a bucolic picnic!
Then take a trail to the Delphi Mountains, magnificent peaked mountains that change with the light of day.
You’ll then cross a pretty coniferous forest, walk through the Sheefry’s mountains and pass by Lough Lugacoliwee lake.
Your day ends at the hamlet of Drummin. Meals and overnight stay.

The walk starts again from Drummin, heading for Croagh Patrick mountain, an eminent place of pilgrimage, which is practiced every year (many pilgrims climb the mountain barefoot!).
You then have the choice of climbing to its summit… or skirting the mountain to reach the ocean coast… all the way to Westport!
