Croaghaun Mountain lies to the north-west of Achill Island, and is the island’s second highest peak. It can only be admired from the sea, or via a hike, which will allow the bravest to survey the mountain all the way to the summit, and admire the highest point of its cliffs.
For walkers, you’ll need to leave your car at the Keem beach parking lot, itself located on Achill Island, and then take a path that will lead you to Croaghaun Mountain.
The climb itself requires a bit of physical fitness due to its sometimes steep gradient, but on the whole, an average walker will be able to reach it without any problem.
Once you’ve reached the summit, you’ll be able to enjoy a breathtaking view, and the tumultuous ocean will undoubtedly enhance the beauty of this exceptional panorama! Some of these cliffs seem to literally plunge under your feet into the ocean.
Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, pelagic sharks, orcas and other humpback whales! The area is also a haven for porpoises, as well as a few peregrine falcons…
