A Galway boat in the Galway City Museum – WordRidden – cc
Opened in July 2006, the Galway Museum is located near the River Corrib. Impossible to miss with its ultra-modern architecture, it exhibits a particularly vast collection of cultural and historical objects.
From the Viking Invasion, to the Channel Invasions, right up to the present day, the museum’s main focus is on everyday objects, presenting the daily lives of the men and women who lived around Galway during all periods. From the daily life of the Irish peasantry to that of the Irish fishermen, the exhibition is rather sympathetic and well documented!
Don’t miss their hooker, a magnificent boat typical of the town, which used to be used by fishermen to fetch fish off Galway Bay… The latter is on display in the museum, with extensive explanations.
Don’t miss their many reconstructions and models, such as that of the village of Claddagh (the famous village that gave rise to the creation of the Claddagh ring), or the many farming tools on display throughout the museum, which will give you a good idea of the farming practices of the time!
Finally, after your visit, be sure to take a stroll along the Long Walk. It’s one of the city’s most emblematic walks, and well worth the detour!
