The Spanish Arch is a curiosity in Galway, Ireland. This is an ancient city gate built in 1584 to protect the city’s port and fish market. Set on the shores of Lough Corrib, this ashlar arch is a popular place for tourists to stroll!

A defensive wall facing Lough Corrib

The Spanish Arch is a pretty wall that can be admired by taking“The Long Walk” along the Lough Corrib river. With its 2 stone arches, the building is imposing, quite deep, and has a strange, serious charm, with its proximity to the quays, and the quiet fishermen who come to cast their lines.

It is of course possible to walk through the arch.

Admittedly, the monument may seem austere and of limited tourist interest, but it is above all a rallying point for many Galway residents.

Many students gather here to enjoy the view over Lough Corrib, to sit on the quayside for a quick meal, to chat with friends, to fish, or simply to relax and take in the atmosphere.
