Shannon Airport is Ireland’s second largest airport. Located close to Limerick and Ennis, the airport is an excellent alternative to Dublin International Airport, if you want to discover Ireland outside its capital, and be ready to hit the Irish country roads without too much delay. Renowned for its efficiency, and the growing number of flights it handles, Shannon airport is trying to win the crazy challenge of competing with Dublin airport…

Shannon International Airport: a rapidly expanding airport complex

Location

Thanks to its proximity to Limerick and the region’s major motorways, Shannon airport is ideal for travelers wishing to discover south-west Ireland with its famous Ring of Kerry, County Cork, or County Clare (and its legendary Cliffs of Moher).

Arriving directly in Shannon saves you a lot of kilometers to cover, as well as the extra fatigue of transport.

In addition, Shannon airport is less congested than its Dublin counterpart, making it much easier to get to and from, either way.

Airport services

In addition to international flights, Shannon also operates domestic routes between Dublin and Belfast. On the transatlantic side, the airport serves most of Europe’s major cities and capitals, via numerous airlines. Apart from this advantage, here’s an overview of what Shannon Airport has to offer:

  • 2 large pay parking lots (long and short term) are available at the airport, 24 hours a day.
  • an arrivals hall open from 6am to 11pm, with several car rental companies.
  • public transport (buses and cabs) is available right outside the airport, with links to Limerick, Galway and Ennis.
  • exchange offices in the terminal lobby
  • bars and restaurants (to enjoy Irish gastronomy). These are mainly located in loading terminals.
  • duty-free stores with tax-free products (located in boarding terminals).
