Slea Head Drive is the perfect way to discover the Dingle Peninsula! Popular with tourists, this tour winds its way along the Irish coast to admire its cliffs, reefs, bays and white sandy beaches. In short, picture-postcard scenery!
Slea Head Drive is often considered one of Ireland’s most beautiful roads. It starts in Dingle, on the R559, and from the outset offers exceptional views of the Irish coastline and surrounding area. In fact, you can be sure that the beauty of the scenery will have you making numerous stops by car, just long enough to admire the panorama and take a few photos! (The road has a few verges which have been specially laid out for the occasion).
The route takes you through many small villages, including Dunquin, a small fishing hamlet whose port offers shuttle services to Blasket Island, a magnificent island deserted by its inhabitants over 60 years ago.
Don’t miss Dunbeg Fort, a prehistoric ringfort dating back to the Bronze Age. It was built on the edge of the cliff, but can be seen from the road. The vestige is quite nice, and well preserved.
If you continue on, don’t forget to stop for a moment to admire the breathtaking view of the bay and cliffs of Ballyferriter. It’s a breathtaking sight that will show you Ireland at its most beautiful! The Atlantic Ocean crashes with all its might against the Peninsula’s reefs, in stunning contrast to the lush green of the surrounding grassy plains!
Beware, however, of the road, which can sometimes be narrow and full of holes…
