“Sphere With Sphere” is the name of a bold sculpture in the courtyard of Dublin’s famous Trinity College. Installed opposite the “Vieille Biblliothèque”, this work of art has become an emblem of the university. The Sphere With Sphere was created and donated to Trinity College by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro in 1982. It depicts a metal sphere whose surface has been cracked, revealing a second sphere inside, with a complex internal structure.
For the record, Pomodoro originally created it for the Vatican Church in the 1960s. But on the strength of his success, he would then have started a new series of spheres scattered all over the World: United Nations headquarters in New York, Trinity College in Dublin, Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis in the United States, Museum of Contemporary Art in Teheran, Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus and Tel-Aviv University in Israel…etc….
For the artist, the inner ball represents the Earth. While the outer sphere would represent Christianity. The design of the inner layers then resembles the gears or cogs of a complex machine… symbolizing all the fragility and complexity of the world.
This work of art is now a symbol of Trinity College. A sculpture that students and teachers pass by almost without a thought, while tourists and travelers take their time to admire it.
