Fish lovers will love it: the Burren Smokehouse is the temple of smoked salmon and authentic tastes. The perfect opportunity to discover the typical Irish know-how of fish farming and smoking. And believe us, it’s worth the detour!
It has to be said that this establishment has bottle age. Founded in 1989 by the couple Birgitta and Peter Curtin, the smokehouse is located in Lisdoonvarna, in the heart of the Burren, Ireland’s wilderness and tourist region. It has a reputation for excellence thanks to its handcrafted products, which has spread beyond Ireland’s borders.
Because here, fish is smoked on the spot, with respect for the product and centuries of tradition and know-how. The focus is on quality fresh fish from the Burren region. Local woods are used to smoke the fish… And we offer innovative tastes.
The Burren Smokehouse is unique in that it offers different types of smoking. Here, fish is smoked hot… It can also be smoked cold… Season with spices and surprising ingredients such as honey, seaweed flakes, dill, whiskey or lemon.
The result is stunning, tasty and delicious!
From time to time, the store opens its backstage to visitors. A rare opportunity to learn more about ancestral methods of smoking fish the Irish way. The tour is fascinating, and offers a comprehensive overview of the history of smoking in Ireland, the smoking techniques employed, and how the Irish enjoy the finished product.
A warm welcome awaits you on the premises: the staff are inexhaustible on the subject, and will give you all the advice you need on how to enjoy their products.
As for the store… It’s a real call to gourmandise. You’ll have a vast choice of smoked and marinated fish, from organic wild salmon to mackerel and rainbow trout. You can buy on the spot: the fish are all vacuum-packed (handy if you want to bring some back from your trip).
The establishment also offers themed gourmet baskets containing their smoked fish, as well as other artisanal ingredients from the region (such as nettle and garlic gouda, produced not far from Aillwee Cave in Ballyvaughan, ash goat, black pudding from Market House in Ennistymon, or beet chutney…etc.).
The quality is top-notch, and the welcome is warm and friendly. Perfect for fans of authentic Irish products!
