The Caherconnell Stone Fort

Irish ringforts
Le Caherconnell stone fort - Kevin Hoogheem - cc

The Caherconnell Stone Fort (Cathair Chonaill in Irish Gaelic) is a prehistoric Irish fort (called a ringfort in the vernacular). Located less than a kilometer from the Poulnabrone dolmen, the fort is thought to date back to the Neolithic period, and is still in a relatively unspoilt state… A real curiosity, to be discovered in County Clare!

A prehistoric Burren fort

The Caherconnell Stone Fort takes the form of an impressive circular dry-stone wall. Varying in height from 1 to 2.50 metres, the fort was once used to protect against attack. Access to the fort is delimited by other walls, which form a kind of alley.

Although some parts of the construction have collapsed or been destroyed, the current layout of the fort makes it easy to guess the building’s original state. Some imposing stones and traces of foundations are also scattered around the fort’s interior. Their presence is explained by a few explanatory panels located around the site.
