The Church of St Anne (also known as Shandon Church and Bells) is a church in Cork, located in the Shandon district. Built at the top of a hill, it has the advantage of overlooking Cork city, and being recognizable no matter where you are in the city! But the church is most famous for its bells, popularized in a 19th-century song (The Bells of Shandon) that has become part of Irish popular culture!
The Church of St Anne was built in 1722, using 2 types of stone: red sandstone and limestone. The use of these 2 materials gave the church a real identity, taking it off the beaten track of traditional Irish architecture.
The church has a 36.5-meter-high bell tower with 8 bells, the largest of which weighs over 1.5 tons. Note that you can admire and ring them during your visit! Last but not least, the bell tower also features 4 black and gold clocks on each side.
Don’t hesitate to visit the interior of the building: the Church of St Anne is very beautiful inside, with its stained glass windows, its light, and its wooden roof next to the main organ. Access is free for all, except for the bell tower, which is subject to a charge (less than €5 per person).
