A book can accompany an entire journey; at Dingle Lit, it also becomes the starting point for a meeting. The Dingle Literary Festival brings writers and readers together for conversations, readings, poetry and workshops. In this part of Kerry, the programme gives a place to contemporary literature in English as well as to creative work in Irish. For visitors, it is a way to discover the peninsula through its words, by sitting down to listen rather than looking for the next panorama.
The festival was created in 2019 with two aims: to offer local audiences the chance to meet contemporary English-language writers, and to celebrate the region’s literary heritage through a programme in Irish. Supporting new writing in Irish is also part of this approach.
This dual focus gives Dingle Lit its character. It is not simply about welcoming authors from elsewhere, but about bringing their work into dialogue with a cultural life that is already present on the peninsula. The organisation is run by volunteers, with the support of partners and funders.
The programme brings together several forms of literature. The website filters allow you to choose between fiction, non-fiction, poetry, events for children, workshops and events in Irish. You can follow an author you already know, or start with a subject that intrigues you without having read all their books.
For the 2026 edition, the general announcement names Sebastian Barry, Natasha Brown, Katriona O’Sullivan, Liz Nugent, Doireann Ní Ghríofa and Christine Dwyer Hickey among others. It combines major talks, readings and writing opportunities. Availability changes independently of the programme: seeing a name on the line-up does not mean that tickets are still available.
For a first visit, choose an event that genuinely appeals to you and leave some time around it. A conversation with a writer may make you want to discover a novel, return to a passage or continue a discussion after the session. This openness is what makes a readers’ festival worthwhile.
The Irish-language programme is an integral part of Dingle Lit. It supports the literary heritage of Corca Dhuibhne and contemporary creative work. The festival is therefore not limited to conversations in English accompanied by a few translations.
For French-speaking travellers, language should be part of the ticket choice. A bilingual page does not guarantee translation during the session. Check the description and ask for clarification if necessary. A writing workshop, in particular, requires you to understand the instructions and work in the stated language.
Dingle Bookshop, on Green Street, is a festival partner. It organises book sales at the venues where events take place, with signing sessions after the events. This makes it possible to continue a discovery by reading the work of the author you have just heard.
The announced programme also includes children’s literature and a Book Clinic run by Children’s Books Ireland. For a family outing, check the age range and language of each event. An event for young readers does not work in the same way as one aimed at adults, and some activities require separate registration.
An Díseart, on Green Street, is the main welcome venue announced. Other events take place at partner venues: the address shown on your ticket should guide your travel. Do not plan two consecutive sessions without checking where they are being held.
The FAQ states that individual tickets are not sold at the door of the events. Book through the ticketing links in the official programme or enquire at the festival box office at An Díseart. If you choose a pass, read what it includes and check the arrangements for reserving seats; an old pass description is not enough to establish the conditions for the current edition.
To prepare for your stay in Dingle, choose your events first and check their availability, then organise your accommodation and travel. The Dingle Lit FAQ supplements the event listings with information about arrival and booking.
