Bull Rock is a rocky island in the open sea off County Cork in Ireland. It’s next door to another, more imposing island: Dursey Island. But be warned: Bull Rock is an island like none you’ve ever seen! It looks like something out of a pirate movie, Pirates of the Caribbean style!
Bull Rock, its ruins and tunnel
Lovers of unusual and mysterious landscapes, we’re talking to you! Bull Rock is one of those unforgettable places that captures your attention without revealing itself completely…
Bull Rock offers an exceptional view from the boat: a rock with a natural tunnel at its center, allowing any boat to pass right through it! The Irish call this tunnel “the Entrance to the Underworld”.
The island’s dimensions are modest: 93 meters high, 228 meters long and 164 meters wide. All surrounded by craggy rocky cliffs that give it such an inhospitable air…
In addition to its mysterious airs, Bull Rock also boasts a lighthouse built in 1889, as well as a few ruined dwellings (the island has been abandoned) overlooking the sea.
These dwellings are almost like troglodytes: built right into the rock, the edifice appears to be sheer, almost threatening to collapse straight into the sea.
The sight of the tunnel and this abandoned house immediately lends an air worthy of an Indian Ocean island. It quickly feels like a pirate movie, and the island looks like an epic cutthroat.
To reach this exceptional island, you’ll need to take a boat. Please note that there is no way to dock there. You’ll need to contact Dursey Boat Trips, a company specializing in island tours. It offers a 1h30 tour around the island, for the modest sum of €40 per person.
Don’t hesitate to book in advance: this attraction is increasingly popular!
