Bunowen Castle dates back to the 12th or 13th century, and was built in Anglo-Norman style by the O’Flahertys clan.
Now in a state of disrepair, it has been deserted since the 19th century, and has recently been purchased for private ownership.
In any case, the castle is much appreciated for its exceptional location, right next to the ocean and the wilds of Connemara: a luxury not available to every castle in Ireland!
Plunged into silence, the castle still retains most of its fortifications and defensive towers. You can see (from a distance) the finesse of its architecture, as well as its inner courtyard and surrounding walls. A charming castle, said to be the stuff of legends! Rumour has it that Bunowen Castle is haunted!
