A castle destroyed by a terrible fire

Castle Bernard is said to have been built in the 16th century, then renovated in 1815, before being burnt down in 1921, during the Irish War of Independence. According to the official story, the Countess of Bandon and her husband, then British owners of the premises, were surprised by intruders advocating Irish independence while dining. Chased from their own home by the militant group, the couple watched helplessly as their chateau was destroyed by fire. In protest, the Countess allegedly sang the British patriotic song “God Save the Queen” as Bernard Castle burned.

Today, the building is in ruins and overgrown. It’s a wonderful playground for budding photographers, lovers of architecture and old stones. It’s a quiet place to recharge your batteries, and parts of the castle are still visible. You can admire the ivy-covered facade, the half-crumbled towers and the old foundations, which are still easy to identify.

The place is charged with a serious charm, and an authenticity that will propel you into a past still alive. A great spot for a historical walk!
