Clew Bay is a gigantic ocean bay with over 365 islands. If the place is magnificent, it’s above all for the incredible number of islets in the bay. The Irish even like to say that there’s an island for every day of the year!
For those with a rental car, it’s possible to drive along the bay on the N59, and then take the small roads leading to the villages of Clew Bay.
You’ll discover a magical coastal landscape! On the agenda are narrow roads, passing here and there through villages with colorful houses, built along long, magnificent beaches.
Not to mention, of course, the fabulous panoramic view of the ocean and its hundreds of islands!
If you’d like to discover the bay by sea, you can rent a boat provided you have a license. If you can’t make it, there are also shuttles to the bay’s major islands and back.
You’ll have the chance to set foot on Clare Island, one of Clew Bay’s most important islands. Less than 6km from the coast, Clare Island boasts 2 major mountains, including Knockmore (463 meters high) and Knocknaveen (220 meters high). Not only can you organize a short hike, but you can also visit the small village of 180 inhabitants that lives on the island.
Don’t miss Clare Island’s superb view of Croagh Patrick, the sacred mountain where Saint Patrick made his pilgrimage. It stands majestically on the coast of Clew Bay, visible from the bay’s islands.
