Discover Geokaun Mountain

A mountain overlooking Valentia Island

Geokaun Mountain is unique in that it is partially privatized: the top of the mountain is privately owned. which is why you’ll have to pay a tax to access it. The mountain is a giant of earth, grass and rock, rather easy to climb. Even so, don’t forget to bring all the equipment you’ll need for a good hike: there are a few tougher sections to cross, which will require real crampons!

The mountain has been divided into 4 distinct observation zones, dotted with information panels revolving around tourist spots, viewpoints and highly historic sites. You’ll learn all about the Skellig Islands, the first transatlantic telegraph cable installed on Valentia Island, Bray Head, the Valentia lighthouse…etc!

The view from the top is extraordinary: you dominate the island, and can admire the ocean, with the Dingle Peninsula, Carrauntoohil Mountain 45 km away, Skellig Islands offshore, not to mention the panorama of Valentia Island, with its lighthouse and cliffs (the Fogher Cliffs)…etc. ! Don’t go up there on a sunny day: the view is unobstructed for dozens of kilometers!
