Kilmogue Dolmen is an impressive dolmen located north of Waterford, County Kilkenny. In perfect condition, it is one of Ireland’s largest dolmens!
The Kilmogue Dolmen (also known as the Harristown Dolmen) has quite an impressive wingspan: 3.7 metres high, it measures almost 4 metres long with its covering slab. The layout of each megalith is quite exceptional: the main table is at a 45-degree angle, and rests on 2 lateral megaliths, as well as on a smaller rear stone, raised by small stones.
It may look fragile, but the dolmen has stood the test of centuries: don’t let its structure fool you, the site is solid!
The entrance to the dolmen is located to the north-east, and opens up to a height of 3 metres. According to the researchers, the dolmen was in fact a tomb, where ancient bodies cremated in the Neolithic period were laid to rest. The site is remarkable and rather quiet, with its surrounding fields. A must-see if you’re passing through County Kilkenny! Without doubt one of the most beautiful dolmens in Ireland!
