Would you like to discover the famous lakes of Connemara, so much praised in Michel Sardou’s song? We recommend heading for Lough Inagh, a magnificent Irish lake in the heart of the Connemara wilderness. Located 23km east of the town of Clifden, the lake has the distinction of being close to the Twelve Bens, one of the region’s magnificent mountain ranges. A magnificent lake to explore!
Lough Inagh is one of Connemara’s most famous wilderness lakes. Located in the Inagh Valley, it enjoys an unusual setting, with the mountains nearby. The lake has its source in several of the region’s mountain streams, as well as in the Gleninagh and Tooreennacoona rivers.
Lough Inagh communicates with Derryclare Lough, another Connemara lake particularly famous in Ireland, located nearby, just a few hundred meters from Lough Inagh.
Lough Inagh is a sacred place for fishermen. Salmon and sea trout can be found here. Lough Inagh and its fishing rights are privately owned and controlled by local fishing lodges in the Inagh Valley.
Fishing is permitted, but you’ll usually need a boat (and a special fishing permit, which you’ll need to buy in advance). Be careful, as the lake has many submerged rocks, which can be dangerous when boating.
The lake is considered one of Ireland’s best fishing spots. It’s estimated that the lake is so rich in fish that you’ll need between 1 and 2 full days to fully discover its beauty and possibilities.
The lake is also ideal for exploring on foot, on the occasion of a short hike. You’ll feel like you’re all alone in the world, surrounded by an impressive wilderness of lakes and mountains. A chance to breathe in the invigorating air, while enjoying sublime views of authentic Connemara!
