Muckross Farms will take you back in time to the Irish era, when farmers lived on the bare necessities, without electricity or farm machinery… If that time seems long gone, you’ll be glad to know that today there are still traditional farms living to the rhythm of Ireland’s ancient agricultural traditions. These farms are located in County Kerry, in Muckross, and are open to visitors…

No tractor, no combine. At Muckross, farmers work the land by hand, or with the help of horses ready to plough. The tools may sometimes seem rudimentary, and the work hard, but such is the way of life on the 3 separate farms of Muckross, not far from Killarney.
Cows, sheep, pigs and chickens are raised the old-fashioned way, and horses help with the farm chores. The farmers’ houses are very rustic, made of lime and thatch. The only means of heating is by means of a chimney, in which large chunks of peat smoke gently.
The clothes worn by the peasants are also from the period, and all the products consumed come from the farm.
If you fancy a visit to one of these farms, you can take a guided tour of the different farms, and meet the farmers for a chat and to learn more about this way of life.
On the tour, you’ll have the chance to visit farms and farmhouses, and learn about traditional Irish techniques for working the land and raising livestock.
