Ross Errily Abbey (Mainistir Ros Oirialaigh in Irish Gaelic) is a Franciscan monastery dating from 1351. Located near Headford in County Galway, the site has been remarkably well preserved, and attracts many visitors every day to discover its medieval remains. A place to see again and again!
The monastery is easily accessible on foot: set in a green field (surrounded by local cows grazing peacefully near the ruins), the building is impossible to miss!
Overall, the monument is in very good condition. It features a church, a small square tower with a bell tower, a cloister, a secondary courtyard and several small surrounding buildings that served as living quarters for the monks. These dwellings were equipped with an imposing fireplace (in remarkable condition to this day), a kitchen, a dining room and dormitories on the upper floors.
Be careful not to damage the ruins during your visit: some of them are sometimes wobbly, and you’re advised to keep slightly away from them to avoid any landslides.
