Shane’s Castle is a ruined castle built near Randalstown in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. With its deep, authentic charm, it was the setting for the filming of the Iron Throne series. A little marvel of Northern Irish history!
Shane’s Castle was built in the 14th century on the shores of Lough Neagh. Raised by the O’Neill family, he was initially known as the “Eden-Duff-Carrick”. It wasn’t until 1722 that the castle was renamed “Shane’s Castle” by its owner, Shane O’Neill MacBrien.
Featuring turrets and defensive walls, its current state is explained by a terrible fire in 1816. At the time, numerous improvements had been undertaken, including the creation of a terrace in 1800. Unfortunately, all this was destroyed, and the château left to rot.
