Perhaps you’ve already heard the term Bloody Sunday… It refers to two dramatic episodes in Irish history, when the British didn’t hesitate to fire on an unarmed crowd…
Tensions between England and Ireland have existed for centuries… and caused dramatic events right up to the 20th century. Between territorial wars and political and economic stakes, the United Kingdom has never ceased to impose its presence on Irish soil… Throughout history, this has led to terrible battles, wars and outbursts, pitting Irish independence fighters against British imperialists.
Among other things, this gave rise to two infamous moments in Irish history: both known as Bloody Sunday.
The first episode took place in 1920 at the famous Croke Park stadium (where Black and Tans deliberately opened fire on the crowd attending the match). The second occurred on January 30, 1972 in Londonderry, when British military troops opened fire on unarmed peace protesters.
These actions deeply shocked international opinion, and further entrenched entrenched entrenched positions within both camps.
Here’s their story.
