Connemara Loop

A complete tour of Connemara!

The circuit is several dozen kilometers long and can be tackled from anywhere. Nevertheless, we advise you to approach it from the south, from Maam Cross, a small town on the N59, which marks the beginning of Connemara.

Once there, the Connemarra Loop takes you along the R3336 towards the village of Leenane and on to Killary, where you can admire Killary Harbour, Ireland’s only fjord, set in an exceptional natural setting.

The site is magnificent: don’t hesitate to stop off for a picnic or to sample the local cuisine – you won’t be disappointed by their welcome!

Continue on to Lettergesh, then head for Tully (on the Renvyle Peninsula), where you can admire Tully Castle, a superb ruined castle full of charm and authenticity. The surrounding area is 100% picturesque, and will take you right to the heart of historic Ireland!

Then head for Renvyle, renowned for the charm of its town center, but above all, for the unimaginable beauty of its beaches! White sand, turquoise water… Enough to make you want to take a dip, but be warned: the water is often freezing! The terrain is ideal for kite flying or simply admiring the beauty of the ocean.

Then head back down to Letterfrack, where the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous and wild: you’re now in the heart of Connemara National Park! The area is a little more deserted now, and you’re likely to come across stretches of russet moorland, deep forests and a peat bog or two. Time seems to stand still, and the mountains are surprisingly silent…

After a short stroll, take the car back to Kylemore, where you can visit Kylemore Castle and Kylemore Abbey!

In pure Victorian style, the castle is imposing, built right up against the mountain, with waterfalls winding above and a lake facing the building. Suffice it to say, it’s an impressive place! Don’t miss the estate’s gardens, as well as Kylemore Abbey, a miniature cathedral less than a kilometer’s walk from the castle.

Then get back in the car, and head for Inagh Valley: the journey will be slightly longer, but it’s an opportunity to plunge into the heart of majestic nature. Here, you’ll come across numerous lakes, forests and peat bogs. The place is as deserted as ever, and is a true haven of peace! Once there, you can admire Inagh Valley, a pretty valley surrounded by the Twelve Bens and the Maumturk Mountains, 2 exceptional mountain ranges.

All you have to do is pass through the village of Recess, then reach your starting point at Maam Cross: the Connemara Loop is complete!
