Find a comfortable place to stay and make the most of your trip to Ireland.
An Irish landscape has joined Lonely Planet’s global Best in Travel 2027 selection. Nestled between Connemara and County Mayo, Killary Fjord has…
Killary Harbour is a fjord in County Galway, north of Clifden. Ireland’s only fjord, it is an impressive 16 km long and 45 metres wide. The scenery is striking, with clear water contrasting sharply against Galway’s dark, bare mountains.
The small village of Leenane seems to appear from nowhere, isolated amid this vast landscape of land and water. Surrounded by the Partry Mountains, the Maumturk Mountains and the Mweelrea Mountains, the village lies at the head of the fjord.
If you decide to stop here, you will find a few pubs, a shop, a post office and a small number of houses.
Given its size and remote location, there is little in the way of entertainment in the village, apart from admiring the scenery, of course.
It is, however, a lovely place to take refuge in a pub and enjoy the peace and quiet. The locals are naturally welcoming—as they are throughout Ireland—and a little tranquillity can do you a world of good.
This walking route follows waymarked paths along the fjord, with breathtaking views across Killary Harbour. Taking four hours and rated moderately difficult, it makes for an enjoyable hike. Be sure to bring your camera: the views are spectacular and worthy of the big screen.
Killary Cruises offers trips lasting around 1 hour 20 minutes, allowing you to explore the fjord from the water. The cruise offers remarkable views across the harbour and its imposing mountains. Bring a warm jumper, as it can be very windy, especially out on the water.
Follow the R335 towards Delphi to reach a series of waterfalls that are well worth a stop.
